Chop, Chop: A Story of Friendship, Love, Loss and Faith

chop-reviewThis story starts off with a few people heading to an execution of a prisoner who got the death penalty. But to be honest, when the main character, David, began to tell the story in Chapter 1, I completely forgot about that.  He literally starts the story from pre K, and introduces his friend Laci, and later in 6th grade, Greg, and the three become best friends. So we get to see these kids and their friends as they go through middle school and high school. Continue reading

Series with an Impact: Lowlands of Scotland

Lowlands of Scotland

This series, written by Liz Curtis Higgs, is historical fiction based in Scotland.  The books are Thorn in My Heart, Fair is the Rose, and Whence Came a Prince (there is another book called Grace in Thine Eyes that takes place probably 16 years later, but it can be a stand alone).  Since the characters are Scottish they speak a little differently then us, so they ken rather than know and say things like dinna fash yourself to mean don’t be worried or vexed.  And they say och! a lot. The story of this book reflects the story of Jacob, Leah, and Rachel in the Bible.  If you know the story, then you might be thinking, but isn’t Jacob a polygamist? How is that supposed to work in the 18th century? Well, we’ll see. Continue reading

Review: Star Wars Episode 3

RevengeOfTheSithNovelBy Jessica Velez

First of all, I would like to say that I am a huge Star Wars fan.  I have seen each of the Star Wars movies multiple times.  I have won a game of Trivial Pursuit: Star Wars.  I have learned a few Star Wars themes on the piano.  And yes, I do like Episode I – III, even if The Phantom Menace has Jar Jar and Attack of the Clones has the whole Anakin and Padme “romance” that just didn’t feel authentic.  I found that I did not really empathize with Anakin as he turned to the Dark Side in Revenge of the Sith (I’m sorry, do these count as spoiler alerts?  I just always have this assumption that everyone has watched Star Wars). Review: Gregor the Overlander

by Jessica Velez

Suzanne Collins’ first book is described in the blurb as the type of Alice in Wonderland adventure one could have if the main character was in NYC instead of, well, wherever Alice was.  And that is what happens to eleven-year-old Gregor and his two-year-old sister nicknamed Boots, when they are sucked into the Underland…through a vent in the laundry room. Continue reading

Second Hearts

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00010]In the second book in the Saving Wishes series, we pick up the story a year after the end of the first book. Charli and her, to uncomplicate things let’s just say “friend”, Mitchell, have traveled to a few different countries outside of Australia and are currently living in Africa, mostly surfing while working low paying jobs. Charli finally comes to the decision that she needs to see Adam, so she goes to NY, staying in Gabriella’s apartment. But when she finds him, she sees him with another girl, and heartbroken stays in the distance and doesn’t let him see her. Continue reading
