Clash Royale (Review)

Bite-sized tower defense game with steadily-increasing challenge.

I know what you’re thinking – Clash Royale is just a rip-off of Clash of Clans!

I know you’re thinking it, because that’s what I thought as well.

But as soon as you install the app, you realize that it’s not Clash of Clans.

Not at all.

A Fresh Take On Tower Defense

Your first few minutes playing the game consist of a long tutorial, which shows you exactly how to play the game.

Playing is simple: choose a unit from the bottom of the screen and deposit him into the battlefield at the center of the screen.

Unlike most tower defense games, you cannot simply play offense, however, as you don’t always know where your enemy is going to strike. That’s what makes the game challenging – you must play both offense and defense at the same time.

Outside of the battlefield, you can win chests, which give you cards, which you can use to upgrade your units.

There is also the option to join a clan, where you can battle friends and donate/receive cards. But that’s not until you hit Level 3, so if you’re just starting out, you’ve got a ways to go.

Famous Last Words

Clash Royale is very quick to pick up and understand. When you play, you only face off against stronger opponents as you yourself get better. There is never a feeling of being outmatched, or of being too strong.

There is, however, the matter of In-App purchases. Something I enjoy about Clash Royale is that it never prevents you from playing by forcing you to buy anything. In fact, you can only purchase things that enhance the game (such as cards and gems) – not stall it.

Whether you’re a fan of Clash of Clans, tower defense games, or you just want to play something different – download Clash Royale for iOS or Android and give it a try. And when you get to Level 3, join my clan: berserk149

Until then, happy battling!
