[fusion_text]I love stories, but it’s the characters that make them so great.
There are so many characters that I love, for whole host of reasons.
But there are a few characters that, while not my favorite, really stick out to me.
And if they were real, I’d totally want to meet them – even if one of them would probably try to kill me.
Ariadne – Inception
The first character I’d like to meet is Ariadne, from Inception.
Although she isn’t the main character in the movie, she may as well be. Ariadne works hard to bring out the best in Dom, especially when it seems like he’s doing his worst. She is constantly keeping him on track with completing their mission, as well as making sure he doesn’t let Mal kill them all. She also cares for Dom, even to the point of following him into Limbo so that he doesn’t lose himself in there again.
One thing I noticed about Ariadne is that she is teachable. The movie shows us the concepts of dream sharing through Ariadne’s training. She is a very fast learner, taking her lessons and building on them immediately. She uses the information that the others give her to help them out when things don’t go according to plan.
But the thing that sets her apart in Inception is the fact that Ariadne is curious, almost to her detriment. If she wants to know what secret is locked away in the basement of Dom’s mind, she will find out. She is the reason we know anything about Dom’s wife, Mal. It is her curiosity that leads her to ask the hard questions about Mal’s life and death, and lets us meet one of the more complex characters in the movie.[/fusion_text][fusion_text]
Another character I’d like to meet is Thomas Hunter of The Circle Trilogy.
The best thing about Tom is his strength. He is the leader of the Forest Dwellers and would give his life to defend them from the Horde. It’s no surprise that he’s, hands down, their greatest warrior. Even when he’s trapped in a tight spot that he can’t punch his way out of, he uses the strength of his mind to create a weapon to lead his people to safety.
Another thing about Thomas Hunter is his ability to grow and change. His character development from Black to Red is almost mind blowing. Thomas went from broken kid to full-fledged warrior, practically overnight. He went from doing deals with loan sharks to save his neck, to giving up his life to save the world. Come on.
But it’s his genuine love for others that makes him truly great. His love for his people is what keeps them alive during the war with the Horde. His love for the Horde is personified in his relationship with Chelise, and it’s that love that brings about the healing of their land. But it’s his love for Elyon that leads him to give up his life for the sake of the world, keeping the disease from wiping everyone out. Even though the call him a Warrior in these books, he’s more of a Lover than anything else.
GLaDOS – Portal / Portal 2

But she’s a murderer, I can almost hear you saying. And you’re right. She is the villain in Portal and part of Portal 2. But there’s a lot more to her than just villainy.
To start, she is super intelligent. Sure, she’s an AI, but that’s what makes her so special. She’s got all the power of regular computers, without the need of a human to do anything. Her vast knowledge is what saves your life in Portal 2.
In addition, GLaDOS has a class of humor that is almost perfect. It’s that dark, sarcastic humor, that’s kinda malicious, but doesn’t really hurt anyone’s feelings because it’s so outrageous. Throughout Portal, there’s a subtlety to her humor that will simultaneously make you laugh and wonder what she’s really saying.
Lastly, GLaDOS’ determination is almost unbelievable. She is a tester by nature, and will do anything to ensure that the testing goes on. When you kill her, it’s her determination that fuels her revenge, going at great lengths to make sure you regret your decision. And in Portal 2, her solid determination is what gives her the strength to defeat Wheatley, despite being a potato.
You read that right. GLaDOS is a potato in Portal 2. And she’s still awesome.
So what about you? Who are your favorite characters? Let’s talk about it in the comments!
